The Chairman of the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare, Mr Bill Beerworth, today announced that the Commission has appointed Professor Chris Baggoley as its Acting Chief Executive while a new chief executive is recruited following the retirement of Dr Diana Horvath AO on 7 August.
Mr Beerworth said that the Commission was delighted that Professor Baggoley had accepted the position on secondment from the Department of Health in South Australia.
He said that Professor Baggoley is a highly experienced clinician. Professor Baggoley has devoted much of his career to Emergency Medicine, becoming Professor of Emergency Medicine at Adelaide University in 2003.
In 2005, Professor Baggoley was appointed Executive Director of Public Health and Clinical Coordination and Chief Medical Officer in the Department of Health in South Australia.
Mr Beerworth said Professor Baggoley’s present position has provided him with a strong network in health administration and a deep knowledge of the health system throughout Australia.
Mr Beerworth said: “Professor Baggoley’s careers as a clinician, senior academic and health administrator have equipped him with a clear vision of what needs to be achieved in safety and quality in healthcare in Australia”.
